Het is een dag van vasten, stilte en meditatie, met als doel spirituele harmonie te bereiken. Nyepi is niet alleen speciaal om een dag van de stilte, maar er zijn ook een aantal ceremonies die voor en na Nyepi dag worden gevierd en erg bijzonder zijn.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nDE MELASTI CEREMONIE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>De Melasti ceremonie is een zuiveringsritueel, voor Nyepi. Melasti ceremonie wordt gewoonlijk drie tot vier dagen voor Nyepi dag gehouden. Tijdens Melasti heb je de kans om de Balinese cultuur in zijn meest pure vorm te zien. Balinezen komen samen naar de stranden en voeren een kleurrijke optocht op. De Gamelan (Balinese band) volgt de optocht naar het strand, waar de Balinezen hun offers presenteren. Er wordt een grote optocht gehouden met gigantische standbeelden die door de straten wordt geparadeerd. Deze standbeelden worden Ogoh-Ogoh genoemd en representeren een demonische geest, maar staan ook voor Bhuta-Kala (Bhuta: Oneindige energie, Kala: Oneindige tijd). In tegenstelling tot meeste nieuwjaarsvieringen is deze dag geserveerd voor meditatie, zelfreflectie, vasten en bidden. De rituelen bestaan uit vijf regels die door iedereen gevolgd dienen te worden: Geen vuur of licht, mag niet gewerkt worden, niet reizen, vasten en geen persoonlijk vermaak. Het doel van deze punten is het bereiken van zelfreflectie en het terugkeren van een pure geest. Zelfs Ngurah Rai is deze hele dag gesloten. Dit festival is uniek, aangezien het een ceremonie is waarin willekeurige mensen elkaar kussen. De jongeren nemen hun plaats op de straat en rennen naar elkaar toe om elkaar te kussen, terwijl de omstanders water over hen heen gooien. Het festival representeert het aantrekken en wegstoten van negatieve en positieve elementen.
